Medisave guide: meeting the otoscope Pharmacy First requirements

As part of the Pharmacy First Service roll-out from 31st January 2024, pharmacists will be required to use an otoscope for patient examinations, for both adults and children. It's important to have an otoscope that is reliable, easy to use and most critically - compliant with MHRA safety standards.

When selecting the right otoscope, look out for these mandatory functional requirements:

  • Illumination: LED (preferred) or Halogen light source with adjustable brightness
  • Magnification: at least 3x magnification lens
  • Field of view: Wide angle lens for a broad examination view
  • Specula tip sizes: disposable for adult & paediatric sizes
  • Focus adjustment: manual focus adjustment that useful for better views (if fitted)
  • Ergonomics: non-slip handle suitable for both left and right-handed use
  • Weight: lightweight for ease of use, particularly for extended periods
  • Material: durable, medical grade materials that can be easily cleaned
  • Portability: Ideally cordless and powered by batteries for ease of use
  • Hard case: for keeping the otoscope set safe, secure and away from dirt
  • Splash resistance: from liquids and other
