Image of a mouth and smile with title mouth cancer action month Recently we wrote a blog post on Movember running throughout the month. Today however, as it also runs throughout November, we are talking about Mouth Cancer Action Month. Because lung, breast and testicular cancer are more commonly heard of, mouth cancer can go under the radar in terms of awareness and knowing the signs. In our blog post below, we will be pointing out causes, signs, symptoms and prevention with help from www.mouthcancer.org

So What is Mouth Cancer?

Mouth cancer can affect lips, tongue, cheeks, and throat. It is more common in men over 40, but research has shown that it's becoming more common in younger people and women. More than 1800 die of mouth cancer every year, many of which could be prevented if the signs were caught earlier.

Causes

In most cases the main cause is fairly obvious - tobacco and alcohol being the heavy link. The risk is even greater when both are consumed together. Over exposure to sunlight is also a risk to cancer of the lips.

Keeping Your Mouth Healthy

There are several ways to potentially prevent mouth cancer.
  • The most important point is to visit your dentist regularly! This is especially important if you smoke and drink alcohol.
  • Another time your mouth can be looked at is when you are brushing your teeth - check for anything unusual such as ulcers that have not cleared after 3 weeks, or red/white patches.
  • Exercise! An active lifestyle is known to boost the immune system and ward off cancer.
  • When exposed to the sun, be sure to use a good protective sun cream, and put the correct type of barrier cream on your lips.
  • A good diet, rich in vitamins A, C and E, provides protection against the development of mouth cancer. Plenty of fruit and vegetables help the body to protect itself in general.
  • Stop smoking and drink in moderation. The NHS can help you stop smoking - find their smoke free guidance here - Link
